Second Line Education Youth Program

fostering creativity, cultural appreciation, and community engagement

empowering the next generation of culture bearers

The Second Line Educational Youth Program at Feed The Second Line (FTSL) is designed to foster creativity, cultural appreciation, and community engagement among the youth of New Orleans. Through exploring the artistry and traditions behind second line parades, participants will learn about their cultural significance and develop skills in streamer creation, fan crafting, woodworking, and footwork.

This program provides an inclusive and enriching experience that equips young participants with valuable knowledge, practical skills, and a deeper appreciation for New Orleans' second line traditions. Students will engage with the community through events and performances, culminating in a final event where they showcase what they have learned by leading their very own second line with friends, family, and the community. By empowering the youth to celebrate and preserve this unique tradition, the program ensures the continued vitality of second lining for future generations.

  • Fan Crafting

Fan crafting is a vibrant and creative activity offered by our New Orleans youth program, giving kids a chance to explore self-expression through art and culture. Using colorful paper, markers, feathers, and glitter, participants design their own hand fans inspired by the rich traditions of the city—from Mardi Gras flair to second line parades. This fun, hands-on workshop not only nurtures artistic skills but also encourages pride in local heritage and teamwork among peers.

  • Woodworking

Woodworking in our New Orleans youth program offers kids a hands-on opportunity to build confidence, creativity, and practical skills. Guided by experienced mentors, participants learn to safely use tools and craft simple projects like birdhouses, picture frames, and small furniture. Rooted in the city’s legacy of craftsmanship and resilience, the workshop encourages patience, problem-solving, and pride in creating something lasting with their own hands.

  • Footwork

Our footwork second line class introduces New Orleans youth to the joyful rhythm and movement at the heart of the city’s cultural identity. Led by local dancers, the class teaches traditional second line steps, improvisation, and the history behind this powerful form of expression. With live brass music and plenty of energy, kids not only learn how to move but also gain a deeper connection to their community’s roots, celebrating resilience, joy, and unity through dance.
