Young Keepers of the Culture

Empowering the next generation of New Orleans culture bearers

Honoring the Past, Leading the Future

The Young Keepers of the Culture (YKC) program is a youth initiative under Feed the Second Line designed to empower the next generation of New Orleans culture bearers. Through our various programs, YKC aims to nurture a deep appreciation for the rich cultural heritage of New Orleans by engaging youth in hands-on activities, educational workshops, and community events. Programming is open to all youth in New Orleans, providing a safe space for students to creatively express themselves and explore their interests.

Classes and programs are led by culture bearers, ensuring that students receive the most authentic cultural experience possible. In addition to cultural activities, participants receive homework help and meals, supporting their overall well-being and development. Through YKC, young participants learn the importance of preserving and being educated on New Orleans cultural traditions, including second lining, masking Indians, music, and the Baby Doll tradition. They also gain valuable skills in leadership, advocacy, and environmental stewardship.

Our goal is to inspire and equip the youth to carry forward the vibrant traditions that make New Orleans unique, ensuring they continue to thrive for generations to come.

Building Leaders Through Culture

  • The Learning Line

Our afterschool program, offers a supportive space where students can complete homework, access computers, and stay connected to New Orleans culture. With guidance from mentors and culture bearers, students get the academic support they need, while staying rooted in who they are.

  • Youth Second Line Education Experience

Designed to foster creativity, cultural appreciation, and community engagement among the youth of New Orleans. Through exploring the artistry and traditions behind second line parades, participants will learn about their cultural significance and develop skills in streamer creation, fan crafting, woodworking, and footwork.

  • Youth Masking Indian Experience

Discover the heart of New Orleans through our community program, where kids learn to appreciate its diverse culture. Through engaging activities, they explore jazz, Creole cuisine, Mardi Gras traditions, and more. By celebrating the city’s vibrant history, we inspire respect, pride, and a deeper connection to its rich heritage.

"Growing up, we didn’t have programs like this—and I was born and raised uptown. What Feed the Second Line is doing by exposing these kids to the culture early on is powerful.”
