This 8-week hands-on experience invites kids ages 7–12 to step into the world of Black Masking Indian tradition. From designing patches and learning beadwork to role-playing tribe positions like Big Chief, Spy Boy, Flag Boy, Wildman and Queen—this is more than a program, it’s a rite of passage.

  • Sew It

    Our “Learning to Sew” class introduces New Orleans youth to the timeless art of stitching, blending creativity with practical life skills. From threading a needle to designing simple clothing and accessories, kids gain hands-on experience while expressing their unique style.

  • Learn It

    Rooted in the city’s rich traditions of fashion, costuming, and craftsmanship, the program encourages patience, precision, and pride in creating something from scratch—empowering youth one stitch at a time.

  • Live It

    Along the way, they create fun, wearable projects while developing focus, problem-solving skills, and artistic confidence. Inspired by New Orleans’ vibrant tradition of handmade fashion and parade costumes, this class weaves together culture, creativity, and self-reliance.

Masking Indian Youth Experience

  • Program Duration:

    8 weeks (1 session per week)

    Age Group:

    Ages 7-12

    Objectives:

    • Educate children about the history and cultural significance of the Masking Indian tradition.

    • Teach basic and advanced sewing and craft skills.

    • Provide an immersive cultural experience by acting out tribe roles.

    • Incorporate math skills through measurements and pattern design.

    • Foster team-building, community spirit, and leadership skills.

    • Encourage self-expression through journal writing.

    • Objective: Learn the history and cultural significance.

    • Activities:

      • Welcome and program introduction.

      • Storytelling session on the history of Masking Indians.

      • Show and tell with suits and artifacts.

    • Objective: Acquire basic sewing skills.

    • Activities:

      • Introduction to sewing tools and materials.

      • Learning basic sewing techniques (threading a needle, simple stitches).
